TRIP SUMMARY
Enjoy
a 10 Day trip through Yellowstone National Park. This park is huge, and
offers incredibly diverse experiences. The trip will cover 9 nights, 10
days (travel days included). We sleep in simple comfortable
cabins run by the environmentally responsible concessionaire:
Xanterra. The cabins all have 2 double beds and a bathroom
with
either a tub/shower combo, or just a shower. We will travel
in 1-
3 groups within the park, depending on the final number of
participants. Activities will range from a leisurely guided
car
tour with easy short hikes at certain sight-seeing areas to
strenuous full day hikes. Check out the MAP for an
overview of the area. Contact
the trip leader for specifics.
We
will arrive at Bozeman, MT Airport on Friday May 22, 2009. Once
gathered the group will travel by vans/mini-vans to our first port of
call: Mammoth Springs, a few miles inside the north entrance to the
park. We will enjoy dinner and a
lecture by a park
ranger that will give us a perspective on the vast area called
Yellowstone National Park. We will
then travel to the southern part of the park at the Lake Village to
rest after a long day of travel.
We will stay in the Lake Village the
first three
nights. This
is on the northern border of the 136 Square Mile Yellowstone Lake. We
will spend the time touring around the southern and eastern-central
part of the park. This will include a Lower portion of the Grand Loop
Guided Tour and an optional kayak trip on the lake.
On
Monday, we head to Old Faithful village where we will spend two nights
and 3 days touring the central park of the park. Geyser Hill
is
one of the most amazing places on the planet. The 1-1/3 mile loop will
take you to over 40 geysers, including two of the worlds largest. In
addition to these geysers, beautiful hot springs and views of the Firehole River make this one of the most rewarding stretches of
boardwalk in the park.
On Wednesday,
after a day of exploring some more of the central part of park, we will
end up in Mammoth Springs. We will spend 4 nights and
4 days
exploring the northern part of the park. This is where we
have a
guided tour of the Upper portion of the Grand Loop.
It
includes the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone with its Upper Falls (109 feet
high) and the Lower Falls (398 feet high) of the Yellowstone River.
Other very unique scenery makes this part of Yellowstone very special and a
"must see" for everyone.
On
Saturday, we will take a very early morning trip to see the wolves in
the Lamarr Valley - an enchanting place that has been called the
Serengeti of North America. This
alpine desert is in the Northeast corner of the park.
There is a huge variety of wildlife,
including wolves, coyote, fox, bison, elk, pronghorn antelope, and
bighorn sheep. There are also
myriads of small animals, variety of birds including ducks, eagles,
ravens, magpies etc. The
different geological features are also fascinating.
Be sure to bring along a pair of
binoculars or a spotting scope.
On Sunday will travel back to Bozeman
for our
departure.
WHY YELLOWSTONE?
Yellowstone National Park is the
Jewel of the National Park Service. It is the world's first national
park. It
is known for its wildlife and its many geothermal features. The land,
wildlife, vistas and famous collection of the world's most
extraordinary geysers and hot springs, (including Old Faithful) and the
Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone are as wondrous as ever. Located in
Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, it is home to a large variety of wildlife,
many of them endangered species. Common to the park are
grizzly
bears, wolves, bison, and elk as well as 50 other species of mammals
and 311 species of birds including the endangered Bald Eagles,
Trumpeter Swans and Whooping Cranes. The vast size of the park (larger
than Rhode Island and Delaware combined) offers many types of
ecosystems. Because the altitude is between 5,282 Ft. and 11,358 Ft.
above sea level, the subalpine forest is dominant. The park crosses the
Continental Divide and
thus sends waters into
both the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans.
It is the
point of origin for the longest freshwater river system in North
America (Mississippi River and its tributaries). There are breathtaking
vistas easily obtained at altitudes of over 9000 feet. And
there
is so much more. We have packaged our trip to give you the most of what
Yellowstone has to offer. You can’t do it all in just 8 days of travel.
You can never forget this special place once you visit it.
