9/2/2009 Pre-Trip Campout on Santa Cruz

Campout on Santa Cruz Island in Channel Islands National Park for two days / one night, plus one night stay at the Sheraton Four Points Resort in Ventura, with welcome Wine & Cheese Pool Party

When:  Wednesday, 9/2 to Friday, 9/4

What: Arrive any time on Wednesday, 9/2, into LAX Airport, and shuttle over to Ventura Harbor (about 90 minutes from LAX).  Ventura is a quaint harbor town, as well as a surfing mecca.  It’s the premier coastal vacation destination for Southern Californians.  We’ll be staying at the Sheraton Four Points Resort (double occupancy), right at the harbor, featuring hot breakfast, wireless Internet, pool, spa, gym, and more! On Wednesday evening, we’ll organize dinner on the town, followed by a welcome wine & cheese pool party at 8:30 pm, for those arrive in time.  All Wednesday activities will include both the Channel Island campers, and those who will be spending two nights at the resort.

On Thursday morning, we’ll board the Island Packers Ferry (departs from Ventura Harbor) for a one-hour boat ride out to Santa Cruz Island.  The Channel Islands are often described as the Galapogos of California.  Beautifully rugged, you’ll experience some of the most pristine hiking and kayaking on the west coast, with lots of wildlife. We’ll bring with us everything that we’ll need for one night (there is potable water), and return on Friday afternoon, along with some Mosaic members who will be coming out for the day on Friday.  Upon returning to Ventura Harbor, we’ll grab our gear from the hotel, and board a shuttle to camp.

Cost:  The cost of this adventure is $210, and includes welcome wine & cheese pool party, hotel stay at Sheraton in Ventura on Wednesday night with luggage storage till Friday, all meals from breakfast on Thursday, through lunch on Friday, cost of round trip ferry to Santa Cruz Island, limited kayak availability, camping fees, and more. Shuttle from LAX to Ventura and shuttle from Ventura to camp will be additional.

9/2/2009 Pre-Trip Ventura Harbor Resort

Ventura Harbor Resort & Waterfront Excursions; 2 Days & 2 Nights in Ventura, California Resort Hotel – Wednesday to Friday

Arrive any time on Wednesday, 9/2, into LAX Airport, and shuttle over to Ventura Harbor (about 90 minutes from LAX).  This is a quaint harbor town, as well as a surfing mecca.  It’s the premier coastal vacation destination for Southern Californians.  We’ll be staying at the Sheraton Four Points Resort, right at the harbor, where we’ve got a great rate of $100 per room per night, including free hot breakfast, wireless Internet, pool, spa, gym, and more!  Most will choose double occupancy (at $50/night), but you can have your own room if you’d prefer (for $100/night), or split the room three or four ways if others are interested, for further savings.  On Wednesday evening, we’ll organize dinner on the town, followed by a welcome wine & cheese pool party at 8:30 pm, for those arrive in time.  All Wednesday activities will include both this group of adventurers, and those who will be departing on Thursday morning for the 2-day Channel Islands campout.

We’ll have breakfast together each day, then depart for one of many optional day trips;  Choose from whale watching, sport fishing, kayaking, scuba diving, harbor cruises, sailing, surfing lessons, museums, biking, golf and more!  One highlight adventure, which we suspect will be very popular, will be a full-day Channel Islands tour on Friday (approx. $45) on Island Packer’s Ferry.  Expect to meet the camping group there, and return with them on the same ferry in the afternoon. The trip to Santa Cruz Island is about an hour each way, and the island is strikingly rugged.  Spend the day there, hiking, with National Park rangers, and possibly kayaking the shores. Upon returning, we’ll get our gear from the hotel, and board a shuttle for the camp.

Cost:  The cost of this adventure is $140.  Cost includes the following; Welcome wine & cheese pool party, hotel stay at Sheraton in Ventura on Wednesday and Thursday nights, and breakfasts on Thursday and Friday. Shuttle from LAX to Ventura and shuttle from Ventura to camp will be additional.  Cost does not include any sightseeing or activities you choose while in Ventura.

9/2/2009 Pre-Trip Explore San Diego

Explore San Diego - Wednesday to Friday

Spend two days visiting the San Diego area, including a possible visit to the San Diego Zoo, La Jolla Caves Kayak adventure, area beaches, and exploring the Southern California scene.

Please arrive into LAX by 7:00 pm on Wednesday, 9/2.  We’ll drive to San Diego on Wednesday night, spend Thursday and Friday in the San Diego area, and return to LAX Friday afternoon in time to return the rental cars and take the shuttle to camp.

Cost: The group will rent cars at LAX, and stay at reasonable hotels for two nights.  We will share the cost of the rental cars and hotels rooms.  Costs can be reduced by sharing hotel rooms with more people.  The approximate cost of rental vehicles for the two days will be only about $40 per person with gas.  The total cost, other than admission costs or meals should be about $150 plus a $50 registration fee to Mosaic to cover incidental costs related to the trip.

9/2/2009 Pre-Trip Pacific Coast Highway

Pacific Coast Highway (Route 1) from San Francisco to L.A. – Saturday to Friday

Spend a week before arriving at camp exploring and photographing the California coast and culture, driving the famous Route 1 from San Francisco to L.A.  Highlights will include driving the famed “Seventeen Mile Drive” near Carmel, Big Sur, a visit to Hearst Castle in San Simeon, and the towns of Monteray, Santa Cruz, and Santa Barbara.  We’ll have plenty of time to see the sights, and lots of latitude as to what the group may decide to do, so do some research ahead of time to have some idea of where you’d like to stop and what you’d like to see.

Cost: In addition, we will share the cost of the rental cars and hotels rooms.  Costs can be reduced by sharing hotel rooms with more people.  The approximate cost of rental vehicles, possibly minivans or convertibles, will be only about $110 per person with gas for the week, plus a $50 Mosaic registration fee, to cover incidental costs related to the trip.
