ARCHIVE OCTOBER 2002 Return to Events |
Saturday October 12 Indiana Dunes Hike LOCATION: Description: Despite fears of bad weather (a little rain falling the morning before the hike) ... we had great weather (sunny + 70F) and a great turnout (29 people) for the first hike by the the Chicago Mosaic Chapter - the October 12 hike in Indiana Dunes State Park. The hike was a 6 mile loop. We started with 3 miles through forest, then went over a dune and landed on a beach, where we had lunch. Then it was 2 more miles of hiking along the beach, a brief stop for bathoom breaks, relaxing, and a swim (well - one of us, Mike [me] swam in the 60F water!), and then 1 mile of tough hiking up and down the 3 highest dunes in the park - which rewarded us with some great views! The trip contingent was a diverse group, including 3 or 4 who were in town from Canada! Meeting Place: Indiana Dunes State Park - Nature Center. Meeting Time: 11:00 am Carpooling: If you wish to carpool, let me know where you live and if you can drive. I'll set things up from there. Directions: Get to Highway 94 East in Indiana (from Chicago, you can do this via the Skyway, or taking 80/94 East out of the city). Turn north on Hwy 49. According to my map, this should take you right into the park. From there, follow directions to the nature center. What to Bring: Water, lunch, hiking shoes, sandals for beach, swim suit and towel (ifyou want to swim!)
